Todays featured artist is Katsushika Hokusai. Katsushika was a leading Japanese artist in the edo period. One of the things he was well known for was his wood block prints. He was born in 1760 and lived to 1849.
His work and others like it came to the west starting after 1854 when Commodore Matthew Perry forced Japan to open to the rest of the world. This art had a big influence on western art in the late 19th and early 20th century.
