Patrick’s Free Art Course – Lesson 03 Shading – Exercise F

Posted on

For this next exercise we are going to build a kind of light box .  This box is made so that you can set up still lifes with very controlled lighting. This controlled type of lighting is much easier for the new artist to draw.  Below you will see basic plans to create this light box. With this setup you can have one strong source of light. You can make this box from foam board or plywood or many other things. You can also add a top to it if your room light is very bright.  Also feel free to experiment with moving the light source around. You can also experiment with different light sources. Some give soft shadows and some give very hard shadows.

Next after getting the light box built we want to set up a simple still life in it. Use the shapes you have from part projects. The cubes and spheres etc.  Also many people using the munsell system (more on this system later)  will make collections of shapes in different values of gray and make still lifes with them. This will really get you used to judging different values without color.

Any way that’s enough for this exercise. Have fun:)
